The U.S. Department of Energy announced that Vorbeck Materials has been awarded one of 66 cutting-edge research projects as part of the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) “OPEN 2012” program.
Vorbeck was awarded $1.5M to develop low-cost, fast-charging batteries for hybrid vehicles. The proposed battery cells are based on lithium-sulfur chemistries, which have higher energy density than today's lithium-ion batteries.
